Milton Keynes Play Association
Milton Keynes Play Association is celebrating its 40th year in existence! Set up in the early 1970s as a loose collective of families who saw the need to create play opportunities for their children in the newly formed and rapidly developing town of Milton Keynes, they shared play equipment and supported each other’s understanding of the importance of play in their children’s lives.
The earliest record of funding for MKPA was in 1971, from the Milton Keynes Development Corporation, enabling a member of staff to be employed, and for premises to be taken up, and marked the turning point from a pure grassroots community group to the start of a voluntary organisation.
The 70s and 80s saw MKPA moving into larger premises, organising Children’s Day at the (MK) Bowl and running play activities in the green spaces in Milton Keynes.
In the 90s, MKPA moved to the existing premises in an industrial area in Milton Keynes, running successful play delivery, lay training and shop/scrapstore to develop, support and sustain play in Milton Keynes.
In 2009, we launched our playboat, Funion Bargee, a 60 foot narrowboot that cruises the Grand Union Canal offering opportunities for children and young people to learn more about the canal, its traditions, the wildlife and how to play safely at the water margin.
